As a gamer, i like to indulge in the purchasing of special editions from time to time, not too many mind you, just the ones i feel are monumental such as Halo, deadrising and elder scrolls but i've noticed that developer companies have become more than a 'tad' excessive with the editions they release, a perfect example of this would be Ubisoft's next installment in the AC franchise, Black Flag. This title promises 4 different editions (excluding the various editions available from different retailers).
Black Chest Edition:
Buccaneer Edition:
Skull Edition:
Special Edition will be available in GAME in the uk, priced at the standard price but with additional content.
Maybe it's just me but this all seems ridiculous, why do we need one big mega edition and then other dulled down versions of it? It's completely fair to say the consumer deserves variety and the choice of what edition they want but one standard and one special would suffice, with the choices given by my example, no matter what edition you buy, unless your willing to relieve your wallet of £120, your gonna feel like you've been cheated and swindled out of content even though you've paid extra for your now what looks to be an 'inferior but not quite pathetic edition'. The guys with the big money will reap all the rewards whilst leaving the average Joe's green with envy, I'm not paying £120 for one game, no matter how much i love it, i'll opt for one of the more affordable 'not so' special editions and leave all the juicy content to the people who are willing to pay for their mega editions.
I suppose the point I'm making is the only choice i want is
1. Normal edition
2. Special edition
Because i can then pay a bit extra for some goodies and feel as though I'm making the best of the game rather than sitting there secretly hating some of my more financially stable friends who got the nightvision goggles with mw2 whilst i just got a A TIN F**KING CASE...i digress, we shouldn't feel as though we have to spend extortionate amounts just to get the best out of a game, we should be able to have the special or non-special not all these in-between editions, spend a 'bit' more and get a nice case and some DLC, that's all i want, not a statue of the protagonist, a flag, a canvas and all that other stuff, but it seems if i buy a lesser edition of blackflag, i'm losing out on merchandise i don't care about (fair enough) but i'm also losing out on DLC, that just seems like you can be as big a fan as you want but if you haven't got the coin, your having a lesser experience, and THAT ladies and gentlemen, is what grinds my gears.
